Swedish massage is structured and methodical, working muscle groups one by one; lomi lomi is continuous and flowing, working the whole body in long connected waves. If you want a classic, predictable, effective massage, take Swedish. If you want to lose track of where one stroke ends and the next begins, take lomi lomi. Both are on our menu, so we have no horse in this race, just opinions from the massage room.

What each one actually is

Swedish massage is the foundation of the entire European school, codified in the 19th century and refined ever since. The therapist works through a sequence: long warming strokes, kneading, friction on tight spots, rhythmic tapping, vibration. Each muscle group gets addressed, finished, and released before the hands move on. It's the massage your body understands immediately, even on a first visit. Full detail on our Swedish massage page.

Lomi lomi comes from Hawaii, where it was less a spa service than a ritual passed through families of healers. The technical signature is the forearm: the therapist uses forearms as much as hands, in long sweeping motions that can run from shoulder to hip in one unbroken pass. Strokes overlap and flow into each other, often both arms moving at once in different rhythms. The traditional philosophy treats the body as something to be moved like water. Whatever you make of the philosophy, the sensation is unlike anything in the European repertoire. More on our lomi lomi page.

How to choose in practice

Ask yourself where the problem is.

If the problem has an address, a stiff neck, a tight lower back, shoulders that sit an inch too high, Swedish wins. Its segment-by-segment structure means the therapist can park on your problem area and actually resolve it. Swedish is also the easier first massage: nothing about it surprises the body, and pressure adjusts from feather to firm on request.

If the problem is everywhere and nowhere, the week was too loud, the mind won't idle, you're tense but couldn't point at where, lomi lomi does something Swedish doesn't. The continuous flowing strokes make it impossible for the brain to track and anticipate, so it stops trying. Guests regularly describe time distortion: a 90-minute lomi lomi that felt like twenty minutes. It is the closest thing to meditation available to people who claim they can't meditate.

Height of Dubai heresy, but we'll say it: you don't have to choose forever. Most of our regulars use Swedish as their monthly maintenance and lomi lomi as their occasional reset. The two cover different territory, and alternating them covers all of it.

FAQ

Which is better for a first-ever massage?
Swedish. It's the reference point everything else is compared against, and its adjustable pressure makes first-visit calibration easy. Try lomi lomi second, when you have a baseline.

Is lomi lomi softer than Swedish?
Not softer, differently distributed. Lomi lomi's forearm strokes spread pressure across a wide surface, so it feels less pointed even at equal depth. Swedish concentrates pressure where the therapist aims it.

Which one is better for back pain?
Swedish, and if the pain is chronic and localised, consider deep tissue instead. Lomi lomi helps tension-type discomfort but isn't a targeted tool.

How long should either session be?
Ninety minutes suits both. Swedish delivers a competent full-body result in sixty; lomi lomi genuinely needs the longer format, because its effect builds cumulatively and the first twenty minutes are the warm-up for the rest.

Do both cost the same at U Spa?
Almost: Swedish runs from AED 600 and lomi lomi from AED 700, both 60 to 120 minutes, both with the Early Bird rate of AED 400 before 3 PM. The choice is mostly about your body, not your budget.
