The hour on the table is the smaller part of the result. What you do in the six hours afterwards decides whether the shoulders stay loose until next week or lock up again by the morning, and most of the ways people waste a good massage are ordinary ones: the gym that evening, a sauna straight after deep work, a heavy dinner, a glass of wine. None of it is forbidden. It just costs you some of what you paid for. Here is what helps and what does not, in the order it comes up.
The first ten minutes
Lie still when the therapist leaves the room. Sit up slowly, and sit on the edge of the table for a moment before you stand; blood pressure drops when you have been horizontal and relaxed for an hour, and standing up fast is how people feel faint in a spa. Dress without rushing. Drink the water you are offered.
Water
Drink more than usual for the rest of the day. Not because a massage releases anything that needs flushing, a claim you will read elsewhere and should ignore, but because you have been warm under a sheet, you have sweated more than you noticed, and dehydrated muscle tightens again faster. If you had the Moroccan bath or a sauna before the table, double that.
Food
Eat something light within an hour or two. A big meal straight after sends the body's effort to digestion and leaves you heavy; nothing at all leaves you light-headed. Skip alcohol that evening. It undoes the relaxation faster than anything else on this list and makes the next-day soreness worse.
Movement
Walk, by all means; gentle movement keeps the muscle warm and loose. Do not train. The muscle has already had a workout, and loading it again in the same evening is the single most common way guests arrive the next week asking why the massage did not last. The next morning is fine, and after a sports massage the next morning is in fact when training feels best. Stretching that evening, if you want to do something, should be slow and short.
Heat
A warm shower is fine and most guests take one before leaving. A sauna or a hot bath after a firm session is not: it draws warmth out of muscle that has just been worked and tends to make the day-after soreness sharper. If you want heat, it goes before the massage, not after; we explained the order in sauna, steam room and hammam. After a light session, aromatherapy or Swedish at medium pressure, a short steam afterwards does no harm.
Sleep
The best thing you can do with a massage is sleep on it, which is why evening sessions last longer than morning ones in most guests' experience. If you can book late and go straight to bed, you get the full value. If you booked at midday, expect to feel slow for a couple of hours, and plan the afternoon accordingly.
The next day
After deep tissue or a firm Russian session, mild soreness the next morning is normal and fades within a day or two; it feels like the day after training. After Swedish or aromatherapy it is rare. Move gently, drink water, and do not book the gym for first thing. If the soreness is more than mild, or in one sharp spot, read why your back hurts after a massage and tell us before the next session so the pressure is adjusted.
What is not normal
Sharp or shooting pain, numbness or tingling in a limb, a bruise that spreads, or a headache that gets worse rather than better. None of these are the usual after-effects, and if one appears, message us and, if it does not settle quickly, see a doctor. They are rare, and the honest answer is usually that the pressure was wrong for you on that day, which is useful to know for next time.
Between this session and the next
Most of what a massage does is undone by the same habits that created the problem, which is the argument for coming regularly rather than only when something hurts. How regularly depends on what you are fixing; we laid out the realistic intervals in how often you should get a massage.

FAQ
Can I shower right after a massage?
Yes, a warm shower is fine and most guests take one before leaving. Some prefer to leave the oil on the skin for a few hours; either way is fine. Skip a hot bath or sauna after a firm session.
Can I go to the gym after a massage?
Not the same day. The muscle has already been worked, and training on top of it is the most common reason a massage does not last. The next morning is fine.
Why am I so tired after a massage?
Because the body has been warm, still and relaxed for an hour, and that is the state it wants to stay in. It passes within a couple of hours; sleeping on it is the better use of the feeling.
Is coffee fine afterwards?
One is fine. It is dehydrating, so have it with water rather than instead of water, and if the point of the session was to sleep tonight, leave it until tomorrow.
How long do the effects of a massage last?
A few days to a week for a one-off, longer with regular sessions. The habits in this article are what stretch it: water, no training that day, no sauna after deep work, and sleep.
