Swedish massage is the technique most people picture when they say the word massage: long gliding strokes toward the heart, kneading, friction, light tapping and gentle vibration, in that studied order. It is the base method every serious therapist learns first. At U Spa in Al Barsha a Swedish session costs AED 600 for 60 minutes, every day from 10:00 to 05:00.
What the five strokes do
The sequence isn't decoration. Gliding strokes (effleurage) warm the tissue and move blood back toward the heart. Kneading lifts and wrings the muscle, which is where most of the tension actually leaves. Friction works small circles into stubborn spots around the shoulder blades and lower back. Tapping wakes the tissue up, and vibration settles the nervous system before the therapist moves on. Done in order, at the right depth, the body reads it as one continuous argument for relaxing, and usually concedes somewhere in the second half.
Pressure is a conversation, not a preset. Swedish work ranges from feather-light to genuinely firm, and our therapists come from the European classical school where the technique was taught as a medical discipline. If you want to know what that school looks like in practice, the European massage page explains the training.
What a session looks like
You change, lie face down under a sheet, and the therapist asks two questions: how firm, and is anything sore. Both answers are revisable at any point in the hour.
The first ten minutes are oil and gliding strokes across the back, which is the warming phase and not yet the work. Kneading follows on the shoulders and along the spine, then friction on whatever came up in the sore-spots question. The legs and arms get the same sequence at a lighter depth, and the session finishes face up with neck, scalp and a short calming passage.
Sixty minutes is a full body pass at a steady pace. Ninety gives the back and shoulders a proper second round instead of a polite once-over, which is what most desk workers actually need. Two hours is the version where the therapist can stop and stay on a tight area without stealing time from somewhere else.
Who books it
Office workers on a monthly rhythm, which is what this treatment is genuinely best at: not rescuing a crisis, but preventing one. Travellers off long flights, where the whole body is stiff rather than one part of it. First-time massage guests, because Swedish is the safest introduction there is and the depth adapts to whoever is on the table. And couples and friends booking two rooms on the same evening, which is the most common two-person order we take.
If you're torn between this and the flowing Hawaiian style, we wrote an honest comparison: Swedish vs lomi lomi. If you simply want everything covered head to toe without thinking about technique names, that's the full body massage. Prefer the same relaxing sequence with added warmth? The hot stone massage works heated basalt stones into those strokes.

FAQ
How much does a Swedish massage cost in Dubai?
At U Spa: AED 600 for 60 minutes, AED 1,025 for 90, AED 1,200 for 120, VAT included. Before 15:00 the Early Bird price is AED 400.
Is Swedish massage hard or soft?
Either. The technique works at any depth, and the therapist adjusts to your answer, not to a default setting. Say "firmer" or "lighter" at any point and it changes.
What is Swedish massage good for?
General muscle tension, poor sleep, desk stiffness and recovery from travel. For deep chronic knots, deep tissue is the better tool; Swedish is the better habit.
Is it a full body massage?
Yes, back, legs, arms, neck and scalp within the hour. Book 90 or 120 minutes if you want the back worked twice rather than once.
Is it a good first massage?
It's the one we recommend to people who have never booked a massage before. Tell the therapist it's your first and they'll keep the pressure conservative until you say otherwise.
How often should I book it?
Once a month keeps a normal office body in working order. We covered the honest schedules in a separate article on massage frequency.
Can I book Swedish massage late at night?
Yes, until 05:00 daily. The 23:00 Swedish session after a long day is a U Spa classic.
