An hour of focused work on the part of you that did all the work: soles, arches, heels, ankles and the lower calf. At U Spa in Al Barsha it costs AED 550 for 60 minutes, every day from 10:00 to 05:00, in the same private rooms as everything else on the menu.

What it is, and what it isn't

This is a straightforward foot massage: warmed oil or cream, firm thumb work through the sole, stretching and mobilising the toes and ankle, and a finish up the calf where most of the tension actually originates.

This is not reflexology, which is the separate practice of mapping zones of the foot to internal organs. What we do is hands-on work on the muscles and joints of the foot, and it is judged by how your feet feel walking out of the room.

What a session looks like

You sit or lie back, feet washed first, then one foot at a time. The therapist starts broad, warming the whole foot, then works into the arch with the thumbs, which is where standing all day collects. Heels get slower, heavier pressure. The toes are moved through their range one by one, and the ankle is rotated and stretched, which most guests discover is the part they didn't know they needed.

The last few minutes go to the calf. Feet and calves work as one chain, and a sole that keeps cramping is often a calf problem wearing a disguise.

Pressure is firm by default here, more than in an oil massage, because foot tissue takes it well. Say the word and it lightens.

Who books it

People who walked Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates in one afternoon and regret their shoes. Retail and hospitality staff who stand a full shift, which in this city means a long one. Cabin crew straight off a flight with swollen ankles. Runners on the Al Qudra and Marina routes, where the pounding lands squarely on the arch. And anyone who spends evenings in heels and has made peace with everything except the last hour of it.

It also pairs well with everything else on the menu. Booked the day after a deep tissue massage or an aromatherapy session, it finishes the job on the part those sessions reach last. Booked straight after a Moroccan bath, when the skin is already softened by steam and scrub, it lands even better.

We're on the R floor of the Donatello Hotel in Al Barsha, next to the Sharaf DG metro station, five minutes from Mall of the Emirates, with free hotel parking. That last part matters more than usual for this treatment: nobody wants a long walk immediately afterwards. Districts we cover are on the massage near me page.

FAQ

Is this reflexology?
No, it's a straightforward foot massage: muscles and joints, no organ-zone mapping and no health claims attached.

How much does a foot massage cost in Dubai?
AED 550 for 60 minutes at U Spa, VAT included. Two guests booking together each pay 20% less.

How long is the session?
Sixty minutes, which is enough to work both feet and the lower calves properly rather than hurrying one of them.

Will it help swollen feet after a flight?
It usually helps them feel better, and the calf work at the end is the part that does most of that. If the swelling is painful, one-sided or persistent, see a doctor rather than a spa.

Do you wash the feet first?
Yes, always, before anything else happens. There's a shower in the room as well.

Can I book it late at night?
Yes, we take sessions until 05:00. After a long evening out, this is arguably the treatment it was invented for.

Is it suitable during pregnancy?
Tell us when you book. Foot massage is generally gentle, but some pressure points and positions are avoided during pregnancy and the therapist will adjust.
