In Morocco the hammam was never a women's treatment; it is where everyone goes, and men's sessions are as ordinary as a barber. Somewhere between there and a Dubai spa menu it picked up an image problem, and a lot of men who would benefit from it most, the ones who shave daily, train hard and spend weekends in the sun, have never tried it. This page explains what actually happens, what it does for skin that gets more punishment than it gets care, and how to combine it with the massage you were probably going to book anyway.
What happens
You have a private hammam to yourself for 45 minutes, with its own steam room and shower. The sequence is fixed and you do none of it yourself. Ten minutes in the steam, so the skin softens. Black beldi soap spread over the whole body and left to work. Then a scrub with a kessa glove, in long firm strokes down the back, arms, chest and legs, which lifts what the steam loosened; you will see it come off in grey rolls, and the first time every guest asks whether that is normal. It is. Then a full rinse, and you are done.
The Royal version runs a full hour and extends the ritual. The standard one is already the complete treatment. We described each step in more detail in what a Moroccan bath is.
Why men book it
Shaving. Daily shaving leaves the neck and jaw rough, and the skin under a beard line collects more than a shower removes. Exfoliation keeps that surface clear, which is most of what prevents razor bumps and hairs that cannot get through. The scrub does the same for the chest and back, places nobody scrubs at home.
Sun and sea. After a weekend on the beach or a season of golf, the skin on the shoulders and back is dry, uneven and often peeling. The bath takes off what is finished and leaves a surface that tans evenly instead of in patches.
Training. Men who lift or run carry a particular kind of tightness in the back and legs, and the steam before a scrub does what a warm-up does: it softens everything before it is worked. That is also why the bath followed by a sports or deep tissue session is the most common combination men book here.
Events. The week before a wedding, a big presentation or a trip is when the bath gets booked by men who otherwise never would, usually because someone told them. The skin looks different the same day and stays that way for a week or two.
Bath and massage together
The order is always the bath first, massage second: a steamed, scrubbed body takes pressure better and the therapist reaches more in the same hour. Booked as one session, the standard body treatment is the 45-minute bath and an hour of massage back to back, about 105 minutes in total; the Royal version adds the longer bath. Any massage on the menu can follow, and for most men it is deep tissue or sports. If you only want the heat without the scrub, that is the sauna, and we compared the two in sauna, steam room and hammam.
Shaving is also on the men's menu here, and the sensible order is bath today, shave tomorrow; the glove on freshly shaved skin stings, and the scrub lifts hairs more cleanly the day after. The rest of what the spa does for men is on the men's page.
Practical details
Swimwear is the usual thing to wear in the hammam; ask when you book and reception will tell you what to bring. The room is private and nobody else is in it except the therapist; say any preference you have about the therapist when you book. Do not shave on the day, arrive with nothing on the skin, and stay out of the sun for the rest of the day afterwards. How often to come, and the rules before laser, a tan or a long flight, are in how often to have a Moroccan bath; for most men, every three to four weeks is right, and what exactly the glove is taking off is explained in what exfoliation does.

FAQ
Is the Moroccan bath only for women?
No. In Morocco it never was, and here men book it for exactly the skin problems that daily shaving, training and sun create. The room is private and the ritual is the same.
Does the scrub hurt?
It is firm, not painful, on skin that has been steamed and soaped first. Say so if a spot feels sharp and the therapist eases off. The grey rolls coming off are normal and are the point.
Can I do it after the gym?
Yes, and it is a good order: train, bath, then a massage. Do not do it the other way round; a scrub and steam after a massage take the warmth out of muscle that was just worked.
Should I shave before or after?
After, the next day. The glove on freshly shaved skin stings, and once the dead surface is off, the razor sits closer and the skin stays clearer for longer.
How long does the skin stay smooth?
A week or two noticeably, and longer with monthly visits, because the build-up is being removed before it shows. Every three to four weeks is the rhythm most men settle into.
