A four hands massage is one guest and two therapists working at the same time, in mirrored strokes, one on each side of the body. People book it for the first time out of curiosity and rebook it for a reason that is harder to explain: the brain gives up trying to follow what is happening and switches off faster than in any other session we offer. This page explains what actually happens, who it suits, and when a longer session with one therapist is the better buy.
What actually happens
Two therapists stand on either side of the table. One leads, setting the rhythm and the pressure, and the other mirrors: when the left shoulder is being worked, so is the right; when one pair of hands moves down the back, the other moves with it. Later in the session they split the body, one on the back and one on the legs, or one on the feet and one on the scalp, so two areas are being treated at once.
The strokes are classical, closer to a firm Swedish massage than to deep tissue work. Oil, long gliding movements, kneading across the shoulders, steady pressure along the spine. The difference is not the technique, it is the symmetry and the fact that nothing is waiting its turn.
You say one thing about pressure, once, and it applies to both. If you want the shoulders firmer or the calves lighter, the lead therapist adjusts and the second follows.
Why it feels different
With one therapist, part of your attention is always tracking: the hands are on the left shoulder, so the right one is next, so the lower back after that. That tracking is quiet but it keeps the mind busy. With two therapists moving at once there is too much happening to follow, and most guests describe the same moment, a few minutes in, when they stop trying.
The other difference is coverage. Sixty minutes of four hands gives the body something close to two hours of attention. For a guest who is short on time but wants everything done, back, legs, arms, feet and head, this is the session that achieves it without a two-hour booking. We wrote about choosing the right length in how long a massage should be; four hands is the exception to the usual arithmetic.
Who it suits
Guests who cannot switch off, including the ones who have tried the quieter sessions and still spent the hour thinking. Guests landing from a long flight who want the whole body reset tonight. Anyone marking an occasion who would rather have the experience than another dinner. And, in practice, a lot of regulars who simply prefer it once they have tried it.
It is not the right choice if one specific area needs serious work. Two therapists moving in symmetry cannot spend twenty minutes on a single knot; for that, book deep tissue with one therapist. And if the point is to be with someone, you want the couples room, where each of you has your own therapist, rather than four hands, which is one guest.
Four hands or six
Six hands adds a third therapist, usually working the feet and head while the other two cover the body. It is the most intense version of the same idea and is booked mostly for celebrations. Four hands is the version to start with; six is for guests who already know they like it.
Both need the right people free at the same hour, so book a day ahead, and two days ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings. Walk-ins for four hands sometimes work in the afternoon, rarely at night.
Practical details
Undress to the level you are comfortable with; draping is the same as any other massage, and only the area being worked is uncovered. The session is not awkward in the way first-timers expect, because neither therapist is watching you; they are watching each other to stay in sync. If you would like the room quiet, say so at reception. And if you want to build a longer afternoon around it, the spa day planning guide covers the order of bath, sauna and massage.

FAQ
Is a four hands massage awkward?
Less than people expect. The therapists are focused on staying synchronised with each other, draping is the same as in any session, and after the first few minutes most guests stop noticing there are two of them.
Do both therapists do the same thing?
For the first part, yes, in mirror image. Later they split the body, so one works the back while the other does the legs or the feet. You give pressure instructions once and both follow.
Is it worth it compared to 90 minutes with one therapist?
If you want the whole body covered in an hour, yes; four hands gets through roughly what one therapist does in two. If you want one problem area worked slowly and deeply, 90 minutes with one therapist is the better spend.
Can a couple book four hands?
Four hands is one guest with two therapists. A couple wants the couples room, where each of you has a therapist of your own, at the same time, in the same room.
How far ahead should I book?
A day ahead on weekdays, two days for Friday and Saturday evenings, because two therapists have to be free in the same hour. Afternoon walk-ins occasionally work; late-night ones usually do not.
